Universal Studios Detroit

Universal Studios Detroit is a multi level indoor theme park and resort complex owned by Universal Parks & Resorts. Located in Detroit, Michigan, close to the landmark Renaissance Center and within view of the Indycar Detroit Street Circuit. It features rides, shows and attractions, based on both Universal-owned library and third-party companies. It opened on July 10, 2003.


This was Universal Parks and Resorts first attempt at an indoor theme park.


The park is located a few miles from Six Flags Detroit.

Overview []

Universal Studio Detroit features a vast selection of attractions: some familiar, some brand new. These attractions allow the visitor to "ride the movies", through immersive experiences designed to immerse guests into fictional worlds seen only on the big screen.

Development Of The Park[]

In 1997, during the development Of Universal's Islands Of Adventure, Universal Studios got the attention of some midwestern developers. With heavy focus particularly from the state of Michigan. Wanting to capitalize on the tourist attractions around the Midwest, particularity Cedar Point and Kings Island, the state worked a deal with Universal Parks and Resorts to come up with a Universal park for their region. Initially, plans were started for a typical Universal Studios park. However, given the inclement weather of the surrounding area, plans were then modified for the park to be mostly indoors. Construction began in the fall of 1999 and opened a few years later in the summer of 2003.

Themed Zones []

The park consists of 6 themed zones which surrounds a lagoon. Each zone is based on a blockbuster movie or a television show, featuring their own unique attractions, character appearances, dining and shopping areas.

    • Nickelodeon Universe - Themed to various Nicktoons. Opening Date: July 10, 2003.

Canceled or Shelved Areas

  • Homestar Runner Land (HR Land) - Initially, in early 2009, the project was shelved due to the fact that despite the cartoon's popularity on the internet, Homestar Runner was not well-known to be adapted into a theme park area at the time. However, a few years later in 2014 the project picked up more speed. With it, at the time, back on the docket for a possible 2016 opening date. Which occurred in June of 2016.
  • South Park, Colorado - In 2011, Universal Parks & Resorts had originally planned to license South Park from Comedy Central (owned by Viacom) to build section based on the series that would be a sub-area to Cartooniversal. It would have included an unnamed South Park-themed interactive shooter dark ride, a Terrence and Phillip stage show, and a Casa Bonita restaurant. Unfortunately, the plans were scrapped. Both the show's creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Universal canceled the project since it wouldn't be the best course of action to dedicate an entire land to a show some guests would be divided on.
